Backing Up Bases

Here’s the rules for backing up bases.

Line drive/ground ball in front of outfielders

  • Back up two bases in front of lead runners position at time of pitch.
    • Example: Runner on second, ground ball to right fielder, back up home
  • If no one on back up second behind mound.

Normal fly ball to outfielder

  • Back up one base in front of lead runners position at time of pitch.
    • Example: Runner on third, fly ball to center fielder, back up home
  • If no one on back up second behind mound

Over outfielders or in gap

  • Run to half way between third and home in foul territory and back up where ever catcher says.
  • If no one on, back up third.

In recap,

Bounce = 2 bases

Caught = 1 base

Gap = Ready third or home
